One of my best memories of Christmas was in 1955 or '56. I got my first bicycle (a Schwinn). My uncle Al Wingate (Harding '58) patiently ran along beside me on our street one day trying to teach me to ride without training wheels. I was riding for 3 or 4 seconds before I looked around to see he was way behind me grinning from ear to ear. Thought he was still balancing me the entire time.
Shortly afterwards, I taught myself how to crash, with no help from uncle Al.

It reminds me of my first 2 wheeler that year. My parents took my brother and I and our new bikes to my Grand Parents house for Christmas dinner. My Grandfather did the same thing with me, running alongside and finally letting go to let me do it on my own! What a great day that was.

I, too, remember getting my first bike for Christmas but I also got a Barbie doll! The very first year they were made (guessing 1960 or 1961). It had short black hair rather than the blonde ponytail that she has now. I collected quite a few dolls and clothes and had a special suitcase for it all. When I was about 16 or 17, I was "too old" for Barbie dolls so I gave them to a friend of mine's little sister. I have kicked myself many times over the years for that!!!
